A normal boy currently in middle school, named Tsunayoshi "Tsuna" Sawada, is abruptly chosen to become the Vongola (Italian clan) Family's boss due to him being the great-great-great-great grandson of the first Vongola boss, who had moved to Japan from Italy during his own time, is told by an extremely unusual toddler called Reborn that he will become the tenth (Italian decimo) Vongola boss. The other candidates for the position of the head of the Vongola Family have died. For these reasons, Tsuna is the only remaining heir. As such, Timoteo a.k.a. "Vongola IX", the current head of the family, sends Reborn, an infant hitman from Italy, to train Tsuna.
Through his experiences, the initially clumsy and underachieving Tsuna unconsciously becomes stronger, more confident, and willing, which ultimately makes him better suited as the Vongola Family's boss despite continuing to reject his Mafia inheritance. He also starts making several friendships such as his crush Kyoko Sasagawa.
Tsunayoshi "Tsuna" Sawada
One of the least successful students in middle school, Tsuna, finds out that he is the heir to the most powerful Mafia family, the Vongola. The current Vongola boss thus sends his most trusted member, the titular character and infant hitman, Reborn, to train the future boss. He is clumsy, very cowardly and has few friends in the beginning of the show, though that quickly changes thanks to Reborn's involvement into his life. However, due to Tsuna's high position in the Mafia, various other families start working to kill Tsuna which forces Tsuna and his friends to defend against their enemies.
Reborn
Reborn (リボーン Ribōn?) is an Arcobaleno and the holder of the Yellow pacifier of the Sun. The titular character, Reborn is an infant hitman belonging to the Vongola Family. As the Vongola IX's most trusted member, he becomes Tsuna's home tutor and trains him into becoming a Mafia boss. He often shoots Tsuna with special bullets that enhances his abilities . Since Reborn is not an official Vongola member and is only there to train Tsuna, he is not allowed to directly interfere with most of Tsuna's battles, though he is allowed to defend against attacks directed solely at him. His "partner" is a shape-shifting chameleon named Leon (レオン Reon?), who usually sits on Reborn's fedora. No matter how strong the emotion, Reborn always keeps a straight face and handles many situations as calmly as possible. Reborn often says "Ciaossu" (a mix of the Italian "ciao" and the Japanese "ossu", which is a casual male greeting).
Hayato Gokudera
When he was younger, he was a talented pianist. However, he soon decided to join the Mafia after his mother's death. His father is also reportedly a member of a Mafia family. Unfortunately, no one wanted to accept him into their family; the fact that he was an oriental half-breed lessened his chances of finding a Mafia family to take him in. To become stronger, he sought advice from Dr. Shamal, who, at the time, was working for his family.
He and Bianchi are actually half siblings, by their father. Gokudera's mother was a woman with whom his father had an affair. She was a very talented pianist, whom their father fell in love with at first sight. Not long after, they became involved and the woman bore a child. However, in the mafia, illegitimate children are not tolerated, and everyone was told that Gokudera was also from Bianchi's mother. His real mother was killed after driving off a cliff on her way to see her son. It slid off the road at an impossible location. It's been said that there weren't even tire marks. Suicide was considered, but she had been looking forward to that day and had even brought a present for the young Gokudera. Gokudera himself was unaware of what had happened until he was eight and fled the mansion the day following the revelation. However, it turned out that Gokudera's mother was already sick with a disease and it was she that turned down Gokudera's father's proposal because she knew she was going to die soon. According to Bianchi, Gokudera's mother had already died before slipping off from the cliff.
Due to a traumatic childhood experience, every time he sees the face of his older sister, Bianchi, he collapses, sometimes even falling unconscious. He is however immune to his sister when she happens to be wearing something that covers part of her face (mainly the eyes). He has problems showing his feelings to people other than Tsuna because Tsuna was the one who opened his heart.
Takeshi Yamamoto
Rarely seen angry, Yamamoto has a warm and friendly personality and is a peacemaker that occurs between his comrades. He is popular among his classmates, especially girls and loves to play baseball (In the manga) to the point of attempting suicide when he is unable to play. Because of baseball, Yamamoto focuses on protecting his energy and his body in baseball and battle. However, as the series progresses, he decides not to focus on protecting his body so he can protect his friends and family using all of his strength. He does not like to lose and is ridden with guilt and regret upon defeat.
Yamamoto remains calm during life-or-death struggles. In addition, he is a fast learner and understands a situation better than anyone. This leads Reborn to claim he is a "born hitman". However, Yamamoto is oblivious to the fact that he and his friends are mafioso, believing that they are playing a mafia game and that Reborn's weapons are just toys made with advanced technology. He is also optimistic to the point of naïvetè; although many of the opponents he meets during the series attempt to kill him, Yamamoto searches for a way to defeat them without mortal injury, such as using the back of his blade or not dealing a killing blow, and attempts to save his opponents as they are about to die.[11] Even after accepting his role as Tsuna's Rain Guardian and the Vongola's swordsman, he continues to balance his life between baseball and swordsmanship, only devoting himself to swordsmanship when he needs to protect his friends.
Lambo
A 5-year-old Italian assassin affiliated with the Bovino Family. He comes to Japan to kill Reborn, so he can prove that he is worthy of becoming his own family's boss. He first appears on Tsunayoshi Sawada's window and tries to kill Reborn. His future dream is to rule the world. While being taken care of by Tsuna, Lambo becomes very appreciative of his mother, Nana. Lambo dresses in a cow suit complete with a tail, and has a huge afro with horns on the sides of his head which gives him the appearance of a bison. He possesses the Ten-Year Bazooka, which switches the target with their own self from ten years later for five minutes. Every time Lambo loses his cool, he usually says "Gotta... Stay... Calm...", then he uses it on himself, switching with his 15-year-old self. In this form, he switches his cow suit for a casual suit and cow-print shirt. Although Adult Lambo is shown to be handsome, he remains a crybaby, and is often heard saying things that imply his future involves cleaning toilets. He also begins many sentences with "Yare yare" (loosely translated as "Oh my!"; "Oh gosh!" or "My oh my" in Viz's translation), and often has one eye closed. Due to the unstable nature of the past affecting the future, Adult Lambo will only know of certain events after the adjustment in the past. At one point, he does not know of the Vongola Rings, but does during the tournament. When Adult Lambo uses the Ten-Year Bazooka, he transforms into his 25-year-old self. This version of Lambo is seen as having much more discipline, strength and intelligence than of his past selves, even being capable of almost easily defeating Leviathan during the tournament in the 5-minute effects of the Ten-Year Bazooka.
Ryohei Sasagawa
The older brother of the Tsuna's love interest, Kyoko.[1] He is a boxing-obsessed student who often prefers to fight his opponents head on and sees any disadvantage as a chance to improve his fighting skills. He is always hiding the truth of what he is doing from Kyoko due to an incident that happened when they were still in primary school: some high school students who did not like Ryohei used Kyoko to lure him into a trap, which resulted in the scar on his left temple. Though Kyoko feels responsible, he was not dissuaded and continued to fight.
Every time he sees Tsuna and his friends doing something strange, he gets fired up and always wants to be a part of it, though appears to be unaware that it is Mafia-related. He also has a short memory and forgets many important details, something his adult self solved by writing memo's. He often uses the word "extreme".
Kyoya Hibari
Head of the Middle School's Discipline Committee of Prefects, who are actually all delinquents, Hibari is known for using his status to enforce his own order throughout all of Namimori Town. Despite the students' and other residents' fear of him, they respect and rely on him since his presence acts as a deterrent to other forms of trouble.[4] Having great pride in his school, even using its anthem as his ringtone, Hibari is especially protective of it and dislikes it when the "peace" in Namimori is disrupted. The only thing greater than his school pride is his own self pride, opting to ignore the damage inflicted on the school building just for a chance to fight Mukuro Rokudo, whom defeated him before, once more. He dislikes crowds, preferring to be alone, and often says "I'll bite you to death" (kamikorosu) to anyone in his way. He is very confident in his abilities but since he cares little about the events surrounding the other characters, he only involves himself when there is a worthy opponent to fight. Despite his cold and violent exterior, he actually has soft spot for small animals such as Hibird and Roll, and small children such as I-Pin. His future self embodies this as he is stated to be the Vongola X's strongest guardian yet his allegiance remains a mystery to his enemies.
Mukuro Rokudo
Mukuro is often seen with a playful smile and seems apathetic to the suffering of others. Appearing as the series' first antagonist, Mukuro is not averse to disposing of those who get in his way, and is not easily intimidated, usually speaking to others in a very direct and arrogant manner. Prior to his first appearance, he, along with Ken Joshima and Chikusa Kakimoto, is mentioned to have been locked up in a high security Italian prison, which is reserved for the most dangerous of Mafia criminals, who have even committed crimes against the Mafia itself. He claims to care little for others, and simply considers people to be "toys" he can sacrifice in order to get to what he wants. However, despite claiming this, he seems to tolerate both Ken and Chikusa, and even protects them, as well as sacrifice himself for them, when need be, though does not do so in front of them. He also seems to care for Chrome, though hides it in front of others. To keep his identity hidden, Mukuro periodically controls several people, most notably Lancia, whom he uses as a "fake Mukuro". Mukuro is implied to have a strong dislike for the entire Mafia underground, due in part to the experimentations he suffered as a child at the hands of the Estraneo Mafia family. When Mukuro killed his captors, he offered Chikusa and Ken, who were also victims of experimentation, a chance to join him in his quest to destroy the world.
Chrome Dokuro
Chrome is a nice and kind girl. She is very loyal to people she holds dear, especially Mukuro, whom she loves, and is willing to put her life on the line for them. However, she's too shy and timid to the point she runs away from any sign of kindness given by others, particularly from Kyoko, Haru, and I-Pin, as she never thought that she would ever be accepted by anyone unconditionally. This was caused by her once lonely life when she's unable to make any friend and the cold treatments that she received from both her parents. Despite her desire to protect her friends, she lacked self-confidence and quick to look down on her own power whenever she failed.
Bianchi
Gokudera's half-sister; they share the same father. Bianchi, known as "Poison Scorpion Bianchi" in the Mafia underground, specializes in poison cooking. Since she, herself, is immune to her own cooking, she does not see anything wrong with the food she gives others. Even though they seem to have a strained relationship, she has shown great concern for Gokudera if he is injured, fighting, or suffering from stomach aches, which she does not realize are caused by her (except if they do not have eye contact). Before, she was in love in her ex-boyfriend named Romeo, who looks very similar to Adult Lambo. Whenever Adult Lambo appears, she mistakes him for Romeo, and uses her Poison Cooking to destroy him. Currently, she is in love with Reborn, who was a former associate of hers, and wants to kill Tsuna to free up Reborn's schedule, though refuses to kill him for the benefit of others. Bianchi always states that "Love" is the strongest force of all.
