Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog
Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog is a fast-paced cartoon with much slapstick humor, akin to such shows as Ren and Stimpy or Tiny Toons. The show features very few recurring characters, usually just Sonic, Tails, Robotnik and his two hench-bots Scratch and Grounder (with a third robot, Coconuts, appearing often)¡ªhowever, there are many occasional minor characters and robots too. The plots often loosely follow the storyline of the video games series, although when the cartoon began, the Sonic games were still quite new, and lacking much plot or character development, which was filled in by the show's writers.
Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog was created by DiC Entertainment, which produced a total of 65 episodes for its first season, and was syndicated by Bohbot Entertainment, now BKN International (in the original run, every episode began and ended with the "Bohbot Entertainment Presents" logo). DiC ceased production on this comical interpretation to spend more time on its darker interpretation, dubbed just Sonic the Hedgehog (commonly known as SatAM by fans), a series launched on ABC's Saturday morning line-up.
Sonic the Hedgehog(tv)
Sonic the Hedgehog is an American animated television series created by DiC, also known as "SatAM" because it was originally aired in the United States on a Saturday morning slot. It is loosely based on the video game series of the same name. The series aired from September 18, 1993 to December 3, 1994 on ABC. The series sharply contrasts with Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, a syndicated series that premiered in the same month.
The show takes place on a planet called Mobius sometime in the 33rd century. An evil scientist named Dr. Julian Ivo Robotnik (Jim Cummings) who owned a pet robot chicken named Cluck in the first season, invaded and conquered a huge city named Mobotropolis, with the help of his assistant and nephew Snively (Charlie Adler) and his army of robot soldiers called SWATbots. He then used a giant airship called the Destroyer to turn Mobotropolis into a new city, renaming it Robotropolis, a polluted city of factories, warehouses and mining facilities. This invasion occurred on Friday the 13th, 3224, in an unknown month (Blast from the Past Pt. 1 and 2).
Robotnik soon abducted the city's king, Maximillian Acorn (Tim Curry), exiling him to a dimensional warp known as "The Void" and made the palace his own personal headquarters. From there, he captured the rest of the citizens, including an intelligent old hedgehog named Sir Charles Hedgehog (William Windom), a.k.a. Dr. Hedgehog and Uncle Chuck, and his nephew's dog Muttski, and used a machine called the Roboticizer to turn them into robot slaves.
Those who managed to escape retreated into the Great Forest and built a village named Knothole to hide from Robotnik, including a group called the Freedom Fighters, among them the protagonist, Sonic the Hedgehog (Jaleel White), Charles' speedy nephew and the main character of the show, as well as his best friend Tails (Bradley Pierce), a young two-tailed fox who can twirl his tails to fly.
Other Freedom Fighters include Rotor (Mark Ballou/Cam Brainard), a walrus with a knack for machines which rivals that of Sir Charles, Antoine (Rob Paulsen), a French coyote and former palace guard with many personality flaws, and Bunnie Rabbot (Christine Cavanaugh), a pretty southern cyborg rabbit who was partially roboticized before being saved by Sonic. Last is the group's leader (although she at times refers to Sonic as the leader), Princess Sally Acorn (Kath Soucie), the king's only daughter (a chipmunk). Sally carries a sentient mini-computer named NICOLE.
For ten years, the Freedom Fighters constantly foiled Robotnik's schemes. In the show's second season, a winged female dragon named Dulcy (Cree Summer) was a new star. Dulcy's mother Sabina was captured and roboticized along with most of her species. Another character was also introduced: an evil sorcerer named Ixis Naugus (Michael Bell), who was Robotnik's mentor (mentioned in Blast To The Past Part 1 and appeared in The Void). During the takeover, Naugus discovered a portal into the Void. Requesting Robotnik to bring him back to Mobius, Naugus went through the portal to explore it, but Robotnik betrayed him and sealed it, intending on trapping Naugus forever.
The show ran for two seasons before it was canceled. The final episode, "The Doomsday Project", ended with a cliffhanger suggesting a new villain for season three. Many fans and newcomers have debated over whose eyes were in the background at the end of "The Doomsday Project". Some thought it was Knuckles the Echidna, while others thought Metal Sonic. On the popular website, Fans United for SatAM, and the series boxset (via interview, a bonus feature on disc four), Ben Hurst revealed that the eyes belonged to "Ixis Naugus. Not Knuckles. Not Metal Sonic. Ixis Naugus." He also mentioned at Sagexpo that Knuckles would have appeared at the end of Season 3, and would have been more of a main character in the fourth season, had the series been allowed to continue.[citation needed] No mention of Metal Sonic appearing in the series was made.
Sonic Underground
Sonic Underground is an animated television series that follows the adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and his siblings, pink hedgehog Sonia and green-hued Manic. Sonic Underground bears little relation to the often complex Sonic universe (including previous animated series, as well as Sonic comics and games), and shared few established characters.
While it was believed for a while that 65 episodes were made of which only 40 aired, Ben Hurst, a notable writer from the Sonic the Hedgehog television show (dubbed "SatAM" by fans), who was also involved in Sonic Underground's production, stated in a chat at the Sonic Amateur Gaming Expo (http://www.sagexpo.org) that only 40 were produced.
Sonic Underground takes place on Mobius, similar to SatAM, but with notable differences. SatAM included Snively, power rings, Knothole Village and the Freedom Fighters. Sonic Underground did not include these elements.
Though the Freedom Fighters were included in Underground, many of the characters in the Freedom Fighter group that were in SatAM are completely left out (including Tails). Unlike SatAM, Underground also includes Knuckles Another difference with the Freedom Fighter group is that Freedom Fighters do not remain in one Knothole-like refuge but instead travel around Mobius to battle Robotnik's forces on a global scale; and that Robotnik has left most of the Mobian people unroboticised, leaving multiple cities, a poor underclass, and an aristocracy for the heroes to interact with. Also, unlike SatAM Sonic and AoStH, many of the minor characters were not easily recognisable as being based on Earth animals, instead appearing far more alien.
Jaleel White provided the voices for all three siblings. The main theme was composed by Robbie London and Mike Piccirillo. The musical underscore was composed by Jean-Michel Guirao and Mike Piccirillo. The series featured 40 songs spread over the series as featured music videos. Each of these songs were composed by Mike Piccirillo.
Sonic, Sonia, and Manic are the children of Queen Aleena Hedgehog. They are chased by Doctor Robotnik and his bumbling bounty hunter sidekicks, Sleet and Dingo. The reason that he is chasing the three is because of a prophecy made by the Oracle of Delphius (a spoof of the Oracle of Delphi of Ancient Greece) saying that the Queen's three children will one day find their mother, overthrow Robotnik, and together become the rulers of Mobius again.
The three siblings have powerful medallions that not only change into musical instruments but also into weapons when the triplets are in perfect harmony with each other. Sonic's medallion is an electric guitar/gun, Sonia's medallion is a keyboard/gun, Manic's medallion is a drumset/Earth controller/gun. The three use the amulets not only to fight Robotnik's forces but to also have instruments for their underground rock band, Sonic Underground. Sonic, Sonia, and Manic also call Robotnik "'Robuttnik" and "Robarfnik", as opposed to just Sonic referring to him by that name.
Sonic X
Sonic X (¥½¥Ë¥Ã¥¯X, Sonikku Ekkusu?) is a Japanese anime featuring video game hero Sonic the Hedgehog, partially based on the storylines of the Sonic Adventure series. It was animated and produced in Japan by TMS Entertainment with the partnership of Sega and the Sonic Team. In 2003, 4Kids Entertainment licensed Sonic X for American U.S. licensing in a joint effort between 4Kids and VIZ Media (it was formerly with ShoPro Entertainment before ShoPro and VIZ, LLC merged into VIZ Media) and distributed by FUNimation. It is also shown in Europe, Australia, Israel, Brazil and Latin America by Jetix, and in Canada by YTV. Originally planned as a 52 episode series which would be inspired by the storylines of the Sonic Adventure series, Sonic X has now expanded to 78 episodes which were shown in Thailand, and France in February and March 2005. As of 2007, the series has supposedly ended its run, although there are rumors that the show may continue (see below). After almost a full season off the air in the US, Sonic X began a "new" run on May 5, 2007, starting with the series' first episode, though it ended with episode 29 on November 17, 2007. However, the show can still be seen at www.4Kids.tv.
[edit] Series 1 (Season 1 and 2)
During what seems to be a routine attack on Dr. Eggman's headquarters to rescue Cream the Rabbit and Cheese the Chao, Sonic and his friends are caught in a massive and mysterious explosion that transports them to what, at first, appears to be another dimension. Separated from his friends, Sonic eventually finds himself in custody of a boy named Christopher Thornd**e, who saves Sonic's life after he nearly drowns in his pool. Chris lives in a lavish mansion, funded by his two celebrity parents, with his inventor grandfather. Chris aids Sonic in locating his friends, and it is not long before Dr. Eggman makes his presence known. As Sonic and Eggman race to collect all the Chaos Emeralds (Sonic wants to use them to get home to his own dimension, and Eggman wants to use them to conquer this new universe), Chris must deal with the mental disorder caused by having parents that are too busy to bother taking care of him. The first 26 episodes focus on Sonic and the other's adjustments to Earth and eventually, all of the Chaos Emeralds are retrieved and the chaos power warped parts of their home planet to Earth (like Angel Island). On the second half, the show focuses on the plots of Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, and a bit of Sonic Battle. In the end, Chris' grandfather invents a dimensional portal to send Sonic and everything else from his world but before Sonic leaves, Chris kidnaps him because he does not want Sonic to abandon him as he feels his parents did. Eventually, with the help of Sonic, Chris comes to terms with his feelings and Sonic returns to his own dimension. However, Chris vows that one day, he will see Sonic again.
[edit] Series 2 (Season 3)
It is six years since Chris let Sonic return to his own dimension. Chris is now nearly an adult, and even seems to have a relationship with Helen. He has been working on repairing his grandfather's dimensional portal. In Sonic's world, a new girl named Cosmo arrives on Sonic's planet, looking for the legendary one who can wield the powers of the seven Chaos Emeralds. Sonic, having been nearly defeated in outer space by a new enemy called Dark Oak, scatters the Chaos Emeralds across the galaxy, in order to prevent Dark Oak from using their power. When Chris uses the dimensional portal, he suddenly finds himself in Sonic's world. His age has regressed all the way back to the age he was when he first met Sonic; however, Chris still has all his memories of the years he spent repairing the dimensional portal.
Chris learns that to Sonic, only six months had passed. During their reunion, Dark Oak and his Metarex Army attack Sonic's planet and steal the "Planet Egg" from it. Without the Planet Egg, all the trees and plants on Sonic's planet wither and die. Sonic and his friends decide that Dark Oak must be stopped, and they venture into space to retrieve the Chaos Emeralds.
This series is similar to Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog such as Shadow surviving and being released with memory loss for the former and the common Meterex looking like the common Black Arms for the latter. After many run-ins with Dr. Eggman, and the pursuing Metarex Army, Cosmo's dark secret is eventually unveiled: She has been an unwilling spy for the Metarex all along, and the Metarex themselves are actually part of the same race of autonomous, anthropomorphic plants that Cosmo is of, having twisted and modified their bodies for combat after war overtook their planet. They now must depend on the energy of the Planet Eggs to stay alive. When the Metarex enact a plan that could destroy the entire Universe, Cosmo sacrifices herself in order to save everybody with the help of Super Sonic and Super Shadow; much to the grief of Tails, who had fallen in love with Cosmo during the course of their adventure. It is Tails himself who must kill Cosmo in order to release her power, which would halt the advance of Dark Oak and return him to his benevolent form. Her essence is manifested in the form of a seed, which Tails later cultivates.
With the Metarex destroyed, Eggman builds an invention that sends Chris home and Chris accepts, willing to leave all his friends to return home. While in Eggman's teleporter capsule on his way to his home dimension, he sees Sonic running below the teleporter. Chris begins crying, and then the machine disappears, supposedly sending Chris back to his own world. Soon thereafter, Dr. Eggman revives his previous rivalry with Sonic. This rivalry, however, is more light-hearted, as if he revived it just for excitement's sake.
[edit] Series 3 (Season 4) Rumors
Rumors have begun to circulate about a possible fourth season of Sonic X being in development from TMS Entertainment in Japan, who produced the first three seasons. According to one source,[2] TMS Entertainment is listing Sonic X among the anime it is producing (although it should be noted that Season 3 has yet to appear on Japanese television, and so that could be another way of saying that TMS intends to air Season 3 on Japanese television at some point in the future). [3]. The open-ended conclusion of the 3rd Season, Episode 78, has also fueled much speculation. There were many unresolved cliffhangers, such as what happened to Chris after he left Sonic's world, what the pot shown at the end of the episode is supposed to represent (this is rumored to be the seed of Cosmo that Sonic found), and what happened to Shadow. TMS has yet to confirm if Sonic X will continue, although it is worth noting that 4Kids Entertainment, the dubbing and distribution company in charge of the English dub of Sonic X, has claimed that the show has indeed ended its run. Despite the Internet Movie Database claiming Sonic X is still active in production, there is still a good chance that it's been cancelled.
